Fintech Explained (From a Fintech Software Engineer)
I never really understood what's FinTech--there are credit cards, banks, and apps like Venmo, and sure there's software that is used by each but that's the case with virtually anything else these days. Though, then I started working at a FinTech company, and later on I moved to another one, and it finally made sense. FinTech is the intersection of finance and tech--but you already knew that. So, yes, FinTech companies build software that's designed to provide financial services, but what's the big deal?
Well, for starters, FinTech has been around for a while, although companies like Stripe popularized the field only in the past decade. Making a payment 50 years ago looked dramatically different than how it looked like 20 years ago, let alone how it looks like today.
And it does not stop with payments: Raising capital, investing, filing taxes, online transaction integrations, payment terminals, and virtually any other financial service either became accessible or enjoyed a dramatic advancement thanks to the incorporation of software and technology in the financial sector.
All of the above are existing innovations in FinTech--and Chase bank has recently published a report that discusses the future of it--which is discussed in the video as well, along with the different jobs and roles that FinTech companies hire for.
